Gum Contouring
A Work of Art
At Heringer Dentistry, we always say that smiles are works of art; lips are the frame, gums are the matting, and teeth are the paint that invokes a lasting impression. We use advanced Waterlase® technology to perform gum contouring treatment to give you a more balanced and symmetrical smile.
What is Gum Contouring?
Gum contouring is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess gum tissue and reshapes the gumline in order to create a more symmetrical smile. Uneven gums can affect your appearance and make you self-conscious. Excessive gum tissue can also harbor bacteria, which can increase your risk of periodontal issues such as gum disease. This uneven tissue can be caused by gum recession as well.
At Heringer Dentistry, use laser technology called Waterlase, which means faster healing time and little to no pain. Gum contouring can be paired with other treatments such as veneers and teeth whitening to further improve the appearance of your smile.
Is Gum Contouring Safe?
/
Gum contouring is an extremely safe dentistry procedure. You have minimal risk of bleeding and infection, and Dr. Heringer is highly trained. However, no procedure is without risks. Please discuss any risks factors such as bleeding conditions with Dr. Heringer before treatment.
What is Waterlase?
Waterlase is a type of laser that uses precise, high-pressure water spray instead of cutting or scraping with a scalpel. This means less bleeding, reduced risk of infection, and in most cases, little to no pain. Waterlase sculpts the gumline and gently removes excess gum tissue, exposing more of the tooth to give you a more symmetrical smile. Our Bismarck, ND, dental practice uses this advanced technology so patients can experience much faster healing times and fewer side effects.
Advanced Technology and Care to Meet All Your Smile Goals
At Heringer Dentistry, Dr. Heringer uses state-of-the-art Waterlase technology, meaning your treatment is quick and painless. He is skilled in multiple procedures that often go hand in hand with gum contouring, such as veneers and teeth whitening. We will develop a custom treatment plan to meet all your aesthetic goals.

View on GoogleWhat Causes an Uneven Gumline?
Gum recession is a major cause of an asymmetrical gumline. Once the gums recede, they do not grow back. While gum recession itself isn't treated by gum contouring, this treatment can help with the uneven appearance that gum recession causes. Major factors of gum recession are:
Gum Disease
Gum disease is caused by bacterial infections that can damage the gum tissue.
Poor Hygiene
Poor brushing and flossing habits can cause gum recession. Brushing or flossing too hard, improper technique, and even the wrong toothbrush can contribute to gum recession.
Genetics
Genetics can also increase a person's risk of developing gum disease and gum recession.
Hormones
Women are at a greater risk of gum recession due to fluctuating hormones caused by pregnancy, birth control, and other factors.
Tobacco Use
Tobacco use can cause you to be more prone to gum disease, which causes gum recession.
Gum Contouring Procedure
Consultation
At your initial consultation at our Bismarck dental office, Dr. Heringer will perform a dental exam to evaluate your needs and discuss your goals to determine if gum contouring is the right treatment for you. Sometimes, treatment involves other procedures, like crown-lengthening, which removes tissue and sometimes bone from a tooth to make the tooth appear longer. Your dentist will develop a unique treatment plan to fit your dental and cosmetic needs.
Preparation
First, the treatment area is prepared. Most patients do not require numbing. However, if you do require a local anesthetic, or if you are getting more advanced treatments in addition to gum contouring, the dentist will numb you first to ensure maximum comfort.
Contouring
Dr. Heringer gently removes excess gum tissue from the tooth and reshapes the gumline using the laser. This also cauterizes simultaneously to reduce bleeding. Dr. Heringer pays close attention to your aesthetic goals to ensure you achieve the smile you dreamed of.
Recovery
Recovery is much faster with laser gum contouring versus traditional methods. Your gums may be swollen and tender for a few days. It is often suggested that you eat soft foods the first few days following treatment to allow for a faster recovery. Discomfort should be minimal and easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications.
Please let the team at Heringer Dentistry know if you experience pain that cannot be managed, or if you have any concerns.
How Long Will the Results Last?
/
Gum contouring is permanent because gum tissue rarely grows back. Proper dental hygiene will help prevent irritation and gum recession.
"All of the staff at Heringer Dentistry were all so extremely nice and very thorough with answering questions, and explaining what they were doing and what needed to be done. 10 outta 10, would recommend!" Alexia Fox
How Much Does Gum Contouring Cost?
Because gum contouring is usually considered a cosmetic dentistry treatment, dental and medical insurance doesn't always cover this procedure. However, because laser dentistry is safer and more efficient, it can be a more affordable option for patients who visit our Bismarck office.
During your consultation at Heringer Dentistry, we can provide a price quote and discuss your payment options.
