One of the things that I really focus on in my office is the aspect of laser dentistry. Laser is really revolutionizing dentistry and it's a great benefit. The person who wins is really the patient, because what it does is it allows us to do traditional dental procedures with basically no anesthesia or less anesthesia. The process is very comfortable. I'll have patients leaving an operatory putting their hands on their face. I'll ask them, "Are you okay? Why are you putting your hand on the side of your face?" And they say, "Well, I don't feel numb." I say, "Well, do you know why you don't? Because we used the laser."
A lot of patients are so amazed that we can do dentistry without numbing, with just our laser. We use it for traditional fillings. When it comes to gum services, for example, we use it in our hygiene department. We use what we call laser assisted periodontal dental therapy, and we're treating pockets and gum disease with our laser. We are disinfecting sulcuses and pockets. Our hygiene department is very knowledgeable, and they are just doing an awesome job when it comes to using lasers in hygiene. The patients notice it, they ask for it, and we are getting increased healing, better healing and it creates less healing time for it and the patients love laser hygiene.
Another area we use it is when it comes to soft tissues in the mouth. Whether somebody has a piece of gum on their lip that's attached to the jaw, they have a tongue tie, or a little piece of skin that's attached to their lip, to their jaw, we can easily take a laser and just scoop that away from them so nicely. Oftentimes we do that without anesthesia, too and the healing process is so simple.
We use it a lot and we use it a lot for soft tissues and hard tissues. Laser really is the missing link to a lot of dental procedures, whether it's cosmetic, comfortable dentistry, pediatric dentistry, or hygiene dentistry. I really believe the laser, particularly the water laser that we use, is the missing link to a lot of areas in dentistry. Really, what it does is it fuels my desire to continue doing dentistry. When I'm with my laser, I can sit with my laser all day long, and I can do dentistry all day long with a laser in my hand. And the patients love it, also. It's a win-win for everybody.
